SUBMISSION DEADLINE: March, 17th 2023
SYNOPSIS:
Written in 1928, Marita Bonner’s surreal masterpiece, The Purple Flower, is a tale of revolution when all other options fail. The Us, a mythical group of beings, live in a rocky valley bounded on either side by Somewhere and Nowhere. Their only goal is to climb the hill of Somewhere and reach the Purple-Flower-Of-Life-At-Its-Fullest. If they do not succeed, the cavernous nothing of Nowhere will inevitably swallow them. Standing in their way are the Sundry White Devils, mischievous, dangerous creatures who first used the Us to build their alluring world in Somewhere before casting them down into the valley. The Purple Flower is an allegory for the decades after the end of slavery and the prediction of an inevitable revolution.
